Abstract: William J. Sebald was a Naval Officer and career diplomat with the U.S. State Department, as well as a graduate of the United States Naval Academy Class of 1922. The papers cover most of Sebald's public career, including his roles as a midshipman at the United States Naval Academy, private practice lawyer in Japan and Washington D.C., Chief of the Pacific Section of the Combat Intelligence Unit during World War II, Chairman of the Allied Council for Japan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Far Eastern Affairs, and American Ambassador to Burma and Australia, as well as various aspects of his personal life.
