Special Collections & Archives at Nimitz Library is home to over 400 manuscript collections, spanning the 18th to the 20th centuries. Included among the collections are approximately 100 ships' logs, journals, letterbooks, order books, and watch-, station- and quarter-bills dating from 1759-1943. The remaining collections are composed primarily of personal papers, consisting of a mixes of personal and official correspondence, diaries, photographs, research files, and book manuscripts. The department is also home to the records of several of the Academy's alumni classes.
Areas of research strongly represented by the collections include Naval Academy midshipman life, seafaring life, Naval campaigns of the American Civil War, and the role of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps in World War II.
