Description of Contents

The Raymond S. Gabler Papers, comprising 0.9 linear feet of documentation, span from 1942 to 1968, with a bulk of the material ceasing in 1945. The papers are the product of Gabler's U.S. Navy service during World War II as an instructor at the Naval Academy Preparatory School and at Camp Peary, Virginia.

Included in the collection are notes, scrapbooks, syllabi, scrapbooks, photographs, periodicals, books, handbooks, and maps.

The Gabler Papers are arranged alphabetically by document type into a single record series with no subdivisions. The papers focus on Gabler's World War II teaching duties at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Bainbridge, Maryland where he taught English and History, as well as at Camp Peary, Virginia, where he taught basic literacy to sailors. Much of the collection is composed of class and teaching materials, including syllabi and tests for American and world history courses, Navy reading and mathematics manuals from the Bureau of Naval Personnel's Standards and Curriculum Division, world maps, and children's books that were likely used as instructional aids for basic literacy. The collection also includes a scrapbook for each of Gabler's two duty stations. Composed primarily of clippings, photographs, memos, and leave passes, the scrapbooks focus on the daily operations and atmosphere of Naval Training Station, Bainbridge and Naval Training and Distribution Center, Camp Peary. Aside from several group portraits of Preparatory School faculty and students, the remainder of the collection consists of Bureau of Naval Personnel periodicals.
