CHAPTER 47
BOMBARDENTS OF ENEMY INSTALLATIONS ON KISKA
DURING MONTH OF JULY, 1943
The enemy's installations on Kiska were subjected to
eight bombardments by U.S . Naval surface vessels during the
month of July. The area around Gertrude Cove was the main
target. The enemy failed to return fire during six of the
eight bombardments. On 6 July approximately 100 tons of
ammunition were fired by a task force of 3 CA's, 1 CL and
4 DD 1 s into Gertrude Cove, North and South HeadR, the Main
Camp and Little Kiska. There was a simultaneous air attack
by U.S. planes. The heaviest bombardment occurred on the
22 July when 2 BB's, 4 CA 1 s, 1 CL and 8 DD's fired more than
211 tons of shells into the principal targets. Observation
planes reported good results. The enemy shore batteries
responded ineffectively. Preceding and following the surface
bombardment on the 22nd, heavy and medium bombers heavily
attacked coastal defenses, AA positions and buildings.
