Technical Details and Accessibility
The Nestell Papers is the digital incarnation of the Daniel D. T. Nestell Papers, MS 310, in Special Collections & Archives, Nimitz Library. The collection is composed of 229 images representing the Union Navy career of Dr. Nestell during the American Civil War. The images include correspondence, pension claim receipts, newspaper clippings, photographs, and hand-drawn sketches.
The textual documents in the collection, as well as the photographs and ten of the collection's sketches, have been scanned using an Epson V700 Photo scanner and an Epson 10000 XL scanner, both utilizing Adobe Photoshop CS4. These documents were scanned as high resolution, color TIFFs (600 ppi) and subsequently converted to lower resolution (300 ppi) JPEGs and PDFs for delivery. The remaining sketches were scanned from black-and-white photographic copies by the United States Naval Academy Photo Lab as 400 ppi JPEGS, which were subsequently converted to lower resolution JPEGs for delivery.
All items in the Nestell Papers were scanned and arranged in a manner reflecting the organization of their physical counterparts. The Nestell Papers utilize CONTENTdm ® for document organization and delivery, and can be searched using the CONTENTdm ® search interface. The collection can be browsed through CONTENTdm, or by viewing the finding aid for the original manuscript collection, which is maintained by Special Collections & Archives.
